Panch-Tattva: Material Matters
art[LAB] is pleased to present a new body of work currently on display at Gallery Kolkata, New Delhi, as part of the exhibition “Panch-Tattva: Material Matters,” curated by Ankon Mitra.
The exhibition brings together a curated selection of contemporary works that explore the relationship between material, form, and spatial expression, highlighting how artists and designers reinterpret material as a medium of storytelling and spatial experience.

The works presented by art[LAB] are created by architect and installation artist Sushant Verma, whose practice operates at the intersection of art, architecture, and computational design. Through his work, Sushant explores how natural phenomena—such as movement, growth, and collective behaviour—can be translated into sculptural form using parametric geometries and crafted material assemblies.
For Sushant Verma, art is not separate from architecture but an extension of it. Through art[LAB], the experimental art vertical of rat[LAB], he develops works that exist between object, installation, and spatial intervention, engaging viewers not only visually but physically within space.

The works presented in the exhibition investigate ideas of movement, rhythm, and structure, translating patterns found in nature into crafted forms through a dialogue between computation, material behaviour, and craftsmanship.

Among the featured works is Aerial Symphony, a sculptural installation that captures the moment between stillness and ascent. Composed as a field of rising elements, the work gradually transitions from grounded density into airy dispersion, evoking the rhythm of collective flight. Finished in radiant brass, the sculpture interacts dynamically with light, allowing reflections and shadows to shift throughout the day.

Another work on display, aquaMORPH, explores how movement can be translated into surface. Inspired by subtle natural patterns such as shifting winds and migrating flocks, the piece unfolds across an elliptical field of layered wood contours. Brass bird inlays gradually appear across the surface, introducing reflective highlights that contrast with the warmth of the wooden base, creating a wall artwork where geometry, light, and material converge to evoke motion suspended in time.

Also presented is The Golden Ark Bench, a sculptural seating piece that blurs the boundary between furniture and art. Constructed from layered pinewood ribs shaped through parametric logic, the bench forms a flowing topology that invites interaction. Rising from its centre is a delicate brass tree—an intentional intervention within the geometry that symbolises permanence within movement. The contrast between warm wood and reflective brass establishes a quiet dialogue between nature and computation, craft and technology.
Across all three works, material plays a central role in shaping the experience of the pieces. Wood introduces warmth and tactility, while brass elements capture and reflect light, creating subtle shifts in perception as viewers move around the works. This interplay between material behaviour, geometry, and craftsmanship forms the foundation of Sushant Verma’s artistic approach.

The exhibition also reflects Sushant’s broader philosophy of working across disciplines. By combining computational design tools with traditional fabrication techniques, art[LAB] continues to explore how digital processes can coexist with craftsmanship, producing works that feel both technologically advanced and materially grounded.
Visitors to the gallery are invited to experience the works up close, where the subtle detailing of materials, layered geometries, and changing light conditions become fully apparent.

About art[LAB]
art[LAB] is the experimental art vertical of rat[LAB], dedicated to developing sculptural artworks, installations, and spatial objects that operate between art, architecture, and design.
The studio collaborates with architects, designers, galleries, and collectors to create bespoke pieces that respond to both spatial context and material exploration. Working across materials such as wood, metal, stone, and composite systems, art[LAB] brings together computational design, fabrication technology, and craftsmanship to produce works that engage both visually and spatially.
Through this approach, art[LAB] continues to explore how geometry and material can come together to create new forms of spatial storytelling.
About Sushant Verma
Sushant Verma is an architect, installation artist, and design technologist whose work operates at the intersection of art, architecture, and technology. As the co-founder of rat[LAB] Studio and the artist behind art[LAB], he develops sculptural works and spatial installations that explore the relationship between parametric geometry, material behaviour, and craftsmanship.
Educated at the Architectural Association (AA), London, and trained at Zaha Hadid Architects, Sushant’s work combines computational design methodologies with physical fabrication processes. His installations and artworks have been exhibited and presented across London, New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Taipei, Mumbai, and New Delhi, continuing to push the dialogue between architecture, art, and technology.
