After a successful completion of 60+ design workshops worldwide, rat[LAB]EDU (Educational subset of rat[LAB]-Research in Architecture & Technology) is collaboratively organizing GLOBAL VISITING SCHOOL for architecture and spatial design students & professionals focusing on application of Computational Design & Parametric Design. Global Visiting School is a 3-day workshop module in different cities across the world, to impact independent education on Parametric Design and its various subjects through an agenda-specific programme.

Global Visiting School 2019 starts in Ukraine in two cities – Kyiv and Lviv, as a global collaboration between Architecture Of The Future School and rat[LAB]EDUCATION. Architecture Of The Future School firmly believes in creating academic modules to enhance knowledge and competence in the application of new technologies in architectural design with tutors and mentors from the renowned universities and architectural organizations in the world.

AOF School has a clear vision for preparing students for the future that will be embedded with Emerging Design Technologies:

WE LIVE IN THE WORLD OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Technologies gradually change everything – the way we live, communicate, plan, work. Technology is changing the world, creating new opportunities for development in any sphere of human life. New technologies are already the foundation for the further development of the sphere of architectural design. And both future of your business and your personal one as a specialist in the architectural sphere depend on how quickly we begin to understand the need for their implementation, development and application.”

rat[LAB]EDUCATION is an initiative by rat[LAB] to start a new discourse in architecture & parallel design disciplines with the use of ‘computational design’ & it’s various subsets. Spread across various cities and countries, rat[LAB]EDU is establishing a global dialogue in the domain of computational design by actively organizing and participating in workshops, lectures, presentations & symposiums.
While rat[LAB] has taken a top-down approach of exploring computational design through industry collaborations, a parallel, bottom-up approach is also in place to involve students of all levels, from design & related backgrounds. rat[LAB]’s educational mission has led to formations of national and international workshops, programmes, discourses and collaborations which has now opened up new avenues of academic exchange.

// Parametric Skyscrapers

The workshop is designed to cover applications of basic, intermediate and advanced computational design techniques for re-inventing skyscraper design. The 2 day intensive workshop for design students & professionals will delve into computational & parametric methods (using Rhino3D & Grasshopper3D) to create systemic design models for architectural design of skyscraper. Advanced Design Tools such as Environmental Analysis for high-rise buildings will also be integrated in the studio, along with presentation and documentation of the design process.

GVS2019 Ukraine will start in Kyiv & may continue as repetitive workshops and investigate the agenda of Parametric Skyscapers for participants to experience a hands-on experience of correctly using the digital tools through computation and parametric methods.

Studio is designed as a 2-day event in Kyiv comprising of technical tutorials, teaching sessions, design critics, design documentation methods, presentations, submission panel preparations and design exercises culminating in a critical discussion about computational design and its future potentials, pertaining to high-rise developments.

The 2-day studio / workshop shall focus on inculcating the following aspects as a part of syllabus:

  • Parametric & Computational Design Methods

  • Skyscraper Design Tool-set

  • Environmental Analysis (Basics)

  • Façade and Building Skin Design

  • 3D Model optimization

  • 3D visualization

  • Documentation and Presentation

// Teaching Methodology // Tools

//Studio is structured to teach participants the use of computational techniques through Grasshopper® (Generative modeling plug-in for Rhino®) and ways to integrate it with architectural & structural systems for skyscraper design.

//No previous knowledge of Grasshopper & Rhinoceros is required for these workshops as basic technical knowledge will be provided on Day 1.

//Pre-designed customizable tools will be provided on Day 2 for design explorations & experimentations, pertaining to applications for high-rise buildings.

//The studio is flexible to basic, intermediate & advanced users of computation.

//The workshop is curated in the form of a design studio with collective learning than mere software sessions. Software form a part of the tool-set that is inculcated in the 2-day studio sessions.

// Technical Sessions

Technical sessions will be provided to give an insight to computation, algorithms and parametric design methodologies to students & professionals. The idea of designing parametrically and use of computational methodologies is new to Indian context and has great potentials across various design disciplines. Digital experimentations using computational techniques (primarily Rhino3D + Grasshopper) will initiate the discourse, followed by technical sessions, theoretical discussions and presentations.
