About SaaS

Software as a service (or SaaS) is a way of delivering applications over the Internet—as a service. Instead of installing and maintaining software, you simply access it via the Internet, freeing yourself from complex software and hardware management.

SaaS applications are sometimes called Web-based software, on-demand software, or hosted software. Whatever the name, SaaS applications run on a SaaS provider’s servers. The provider manages access to the application, including security, availability, and performance.

History of SaaS

In a 1961 speech to MIT students, John McCarthy, a renowned computer scientist that won the Turing award for his work in artificial intelligence (AI), famously said, “computation may someday be organized as a public utility.” In other words, the concept of cloud computing began as a shared resource of computing power.

While the idea has been around for some time, the web-based technology required to support SaaS matured in the late 1990s. That’s when companies such as Salesforce—which was founded specifically to create cloud software—began offering traditional enterprise solutions, such as customer relationship management (CRM), through a SaaS model.

Relevance of SaaS in Architecture & Design

Architecture and Design profession has always had a direct relationship with the tools available. Design process is guided directly or indirectly by design tools and workflows that can potentially be leveraged to improve design efficiency, performance, aesthetics or all of it. Parametric Design tools and workflows are one such set of technologies that have played a significant role in architecture and design globally and continues to serve as an important technology shaping the architecture of today and of the future.

With this transition into a technology-service provider, the studio becomes the first-of-its-kind SaaS Technology Company encouraging global collaborations in a seamless manner and advocating smart use of design technologies to improve project workflow, spatial efficiency, aesthetic value and building performance through deployment of tested workflows and tools.
