[  ] Workshop Title

Advanced Architectural Design – Mastering Grasshopper3D Toolkits

[  ] Key Software / Tech to be taught

Grasshopper3D (Intermediate & Advanced), Kangaroo (Physics Simulation), Weaverbird (Mesh Smoothening), Anemone (Looping), Zebra (Agent based simulation), Mesh Tools, Ivy (Mesh Segmentation & Fabrication), Pufferfish (Tweening).

[  ] Workshop Description

The cluster focusses on intermediate and advanced aspects of using Grasshopper3D Plug-ins that allow mastering uncommon aspects of three-dimensional spatial explorations. Ideal for basic users of GH who wish to explore intermediate & advanced tool-kits & plug-ins. Participants would be taught intermediate and advanced aspects of visual scripting through Grasshopper3D & its extensions to create complex spatial tectonics that may potentially operate as various scales of a built form. Curated as a ‘comprehensive tutorial studio for GH3D’ through an interactive pedagogy of covering intermediate and advanced potentials of the tool, participants would learn about tool workflow, developing an algorithmic process and exploration of formal complexities using data-driven methodologies. NURBS & Mesh manipulations would form the underlying principles of spatial formations, investigated through a multitude of computational tools. Concepts such as contouring, sectioning, paneling, Graph mapper, Image Samplers, surface tessellation along with some interesting form-development strategies through use of Kangaroo (Physics engine in GH), Weaverbird (Mesh Smoothening Algorithms), Anemone (Recursive Algorithms), Zebra (Agent-based simulation), 3D Field Formations (Native GH Components), Ivy (Mesh Segmentation & Fabrication) would be demonstrated to test the formal complexities of the tool with examples and scripts. The focus would soon shift to applications of the complexities into spatial settings – architecture and urban for further visualization as an investigation of speculative futures with various possibilities.

[  ] Tutor Details

Sushant Jai-Amita Verma is a Design Entrepreneur, Architect, Computational Designer & Educator, currently leading rat[LAB] Studio (Research in Architecture and Technology) (www.rat-lab.org) that investigates intersections of design, art & technology through architecture, interior design and art installations. He holds a Masters Degree in Emergent Technologies & Design from Architectural Association, London and is a former architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, London & a Sr. Editor at Arch2O. He is the founder of rat[LAB]EDUCATION, which is an initiative to spread the idea of computation in design through independently-organized design workshops for profession and academia. Recipient of MAK Schindler Award from Vienna & Los Angeles and a finalist for AIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship from Chicago, his work is widely published and exhibited in London, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, San Francisco, Taipei, New Delhi, Mumbai among other places, internationally. Sushant has been a TEDx Speaker at 3 TEDxTalks in India and is the founding director of Smart Labs – India’s first 6 month hybrid programme on Computational Design that blends studio learning and e-learning using a technology-oriented approach.

Kishore Palani is a computational designer at rat[LAB] Studio working on projects of various scales and typologies and contributing his evolving knowledge in the domain of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication. He has been a student of RVS Padmavathy School of Architecture and SMART LABS 1.0 (First Batch of 2017-18), graduating with one of the Innovative Project Awards at SL1.0 in 2018. With his deep interests in exploring computational design tools integrating with digital fabrication, he has been assisting at rat[LAB] and Smart Labs Programme (2.0 & 3.0) for tutorial support and fabrication. His role in SmartLabs & rat[LAB]EDUCATION has been integral through informal teaching sessions, aiding in project facilitation through digital fabrication techniques and overall logistics of the exhibition.

[  ] List of FAQ

Q1 – Do I need previous knowledge of Grasshopper3D & Rhino3D to attend this workshop?

A1 - YES. You need prior basic grasshopper3D skills to be able to make the best out of this workshop as this focusses on intermediate & advanced aspects. Typically, we start with absolute basics of Rhino & GH3D in other workshops, but this cluster would directly delve into aspects mentioned in programme brief.

Q2 – Would you provide GH scripts & example files?

A2 – YES. All GH scripts & tool-kits from the workshop would be shared with the participants across both days for practice and learning. Example files and assignments are also framed out to inculcate a good learning curve and would be provided to participants.

Q3 – Session B mentions practice time as per schedule? What would happen in that time frame?

A3 – Session B is the buffer practice session to ensure participants can practice the scripts, do the assignments, note down all doubts, etc. Teaching team would remain online (with intermittent breaks / lunch) to help anyone if they want.

Q4 – Will the workshop happen online? Can I attend from any other timezone?

A4 – Yes. The workshop would take place ONLINE completely and open to a wide & global set of participants. One can enrol from any part of the world. Timing is provided as per IST (Indian Standard Time)(with GMT conversion mentioned for ease of understanding).

Q5 – Will I be provided with recordings from the workshop? Can I record the workshop?

A5 – Partial recordings would be provided to participants AFTER the completion of workshop for future reference. We do not allow / encourage participants to record the content due to tutors’ / organizers’ copyrights and anti-piracy rights. Any such action would be dealt with legal action strictly. As organizers, we would provide partial (taking off any confidential content / project info) and providing recordings for future learning.

Q6 – I am shortlisted student of Smart Labs 4.0. How do I avail my free attendance for this workshop / cluster?

A6 – As a Smart Labs 4.0 student, you are entitled to attending the workshop for free, as a part of your pre-programme training. Kindly contact your education co-ordinator to receive the pass. If you plan to enrol of Smart Labs 4.0 and get shortlisted after this workshop, the waiver is not applicable.

Q7 – What all software do I require for the workshop?

A7 – Rhino 6 (with Grasshopper3D) is required. Rest of the plug-in setups & links would be provided upon registration and teaching team would help in installation troubleshoot, if required, during the workshop.
